- Rafters - The sloping timbers which support the roof of a building.
- Reinforced Concrete - Concrete which has been strengthened with wire or metal bars.
- Relieving Arch - An arch constructed above a square-headed opening in a wall, relieving the lintel or beam over it from some of the weight above.
- Rendering - The first application of a mix such as plaster onto a brick wall.
- Retaining Wall - A barrier wall which resists lateral pressure and prevents the movement of earth.
- Riser - The upright piece in a stair step.
- Rotunda - A circular building, often with a domed roof.
- R.S.J. - A rolled steel joist.
- Rusticated - When the joints hetween stone or brick are emphasised by deep grooves or channels to convey the impression of strength or massiveness.
